French 101 - Unit 1 - lesson 2: Say the date

In Lesson 1, you learned to introduce yourself:

Bonjour ! Je m'appelle Chloé. J'ai 13 ans.

Today we're building on that with another phrase you'll use constantly in French: how to say what day it is.

Quel jour on est ?

(What day is it?)

In France, this question comes up everywhere: at school, in conversation, when making plans, when someone asks about your birthday. Once you can answer it, a whole layer of everyday French opens up.

The formula is simple:

Aujourd'hui, on est + day + number + month.

A few examples:

Aujourd'hui, on est lundi 3 août. 

Aujourd'hui, on est vendredi 21 mars. 

Aujourd'hui, on est dimanche 14 juillet.

A note on word order. English speakers usually say the month first, then the day: August 3rd. French does it the other way around: the day of the week, then the number, then the month: lundi 3 août. It's a small detail, but it trips up a lot of beginners, so it's worth saying out loud a few times until the order feels natural.

Reading: A New School Day

It's Monday morning. Chloé and Thomas are at school, getting ready for French class.

Chloé — Bonjour ! Je m'appelle Chloé. J'ai 13 ans. J'aime la musique.

Thomas — Salut ! Moi, c'est Thomas. J'ai 14 ans. J'aime le football.

Chloé looks up at the classroom calendar.

Chloé — Quel jour on est ?

Thomas checks the calendar and smiles.

Thomas — Aujourd'hui, on est lundi 3 août.

Chloé — Super ! C'est le début de la semaine. On est prêts pour le cours de français !

Remember the formula: Aujourd'hui, on est + jour + numéro + mois, and try saying today's date out loud. For example: Aujourd'hui, on est mardi 15 septembre.

French tip of the day

In French, we don't say Aujourd'hui, c'est lundi 3 août. We say Aujourd'hui, on est lundi 3 août; literally something closer to "Today, we are Monday, August 3rd." It sounds a little unusual in English, but it's exactly how the French say it, so the best way to make it stick is to practice it as a whole phrase rather than translating word for word.

Try asking someone today: Quel jour on est ?

One last nuance worth knowing: this rule only applies when you're giving the full date. If you're only saying the day of the week, with no number and no month, French switches back to c'est: Aujourd'hui, c'est lundi.
